The Archive Strikes Back

Hey folks,

Got a few new drawings to put up in a day or two but seeing as Star Wars is back at the movies this month, thought I'd put a vintage Empire drawing up. It was drawn a long time ago, back in high school waaaaay before those crazy time Special Editions with the blinking ewoks & Vader going all Emo at the end of Jedi..

Anyway, in my wee tribute to those amazing ILM guys like Joe Johnston & Phil Tippett, here's my Empire Illo.

Dora

A little bit of an experiment folks..

I've been trying to simplify my work using very basic materials and limited PS processing for sketching. This doodle was originally started in pencil but it just didn't really work tonally (the dark areas just looked too bright)

So..I started again, using some of my nieces Dora The Explorer crayons..

A4 - conte & crayon.

Elephant in the studio..

At the beginning of the year I started reviewing old work, writing out a massive critique of issues I had with my paintings (it is seriously humungous btw) Basically, I figured that a lot of the work was pretty uneven in theme/meaning, style & particularly composition.

The sketch stuff I do is pretty illustrative & quite dark I guess and tends to be a wee bit at odds with the painty, fine arty bits. So really, it's trying to find some middle ground with the new series of paintings...

To loosen some of that concrete between my ears, I've been reading a few books lately which have helped enormously. Juliette Aristides book on Atelier has been brilliant & is choc full o' technical tips. Re-reading my old Barthes book Mythologies is helping a ton with thematics.

The above drawing is just a quick wee head study (on very dodgy printer paper) B5 pencil.

Sketchbook stuff to follow..

Lifearama

Hey folks, decided to dust off the blog thingy after a "wee" bit of a hiatus..

I've been piling up a fair amount of new concept stuff but keep hitting a brick wall drawing some of the creature work - basically the proportions are waaaay out and kinda ropey. I've started going back to basics really - life drawing, trying to get better accuracy with the anatomy.

The above drawings are about A3 and were done in approx 40 mins each, conte & crayon.

- many thanks to Wendy.
